Upper Dolpo trek

Upper Dolpo trek is a rural hidden trekking destination in Nepal. This region is situated between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri ranges. This trekking trail is a remote and unspoiled area near by the Tibetan border of Nepal. This is a region of the minority of the Buddhist monasteries as well as those of pre Buddhist religion of Bon po. There is yet a lot more to discover about the peacefully and detract beauty of this region. Our trekking begins from the Kathmandu valley where we visit to the UNESCO world heritage sites. This route is also one of the restricted trekking regions of Nepal and for trekking in this route you need a special permit. This region covered one of the last leftovers of traditional Tibetan culture. This region is another hidden remote area in far west where Nepal’s majestic natural beauty is still unexplored.

Upper Dolpo trek is also famous for its deepest lake Phoksundo which is the shelter for many rare alpine living being. From shey gompas we follow the ancient Trans Himalayan trade route and return back to Jhulphal as our trek end. It is the most beautiful and the least developed district of Nepal. The trial of this region goes through the Phoksundo national park, conversing the striking valleys, monasteries and landscape. This region is the home of blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, and leopard, wolves and the exceptional snow leopard. The one of the most rewarding moments of this trek is the view of Kanjiroba peak, Phoksundo Lake, and the Dhauligiri massif. The trek indeed treks us into the wild west of Nepal. The person of this region mostly speaks Tibetan language and rarely some people can understand nepali language. The best season for the trekking in this route is spring and autumn.

Details Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and check-in to Hotel

The representatives from Himalayan Scenery will welcome you at TIUA (Tribhuwan International University Airport) upon your arrival. We then transfer you to the hotel for the overnight stay.

Day 02: Full Day Sightseeing Kathmandu Valley

Take breakfast and around at 9:00 AM start to sightseeing point, we spend the whole for the sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley. You will have the full day guided sightseeing of Kathmandu Valley covering the major cultural attractions which have also been cited as The World Heritage Cultural Sites. Which is most popular Kathmandu Durbar square and Kumari temple, Patan Durbar Squer Krishna Mandir temple, Syoyembhunath Buddhist Temple, Boddhanath stupa One of the biggest stupa in the world and Pashupatinath Hindu Temple which is main shrine hindusim temple, After visit return to hotel and stay overnight at hotel.

Day 03: Fly to Nepalgunj 1 hour flight

After breakfast transfer to Domestic airport flight Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj exists near to the Indian border and is the hub of Western Nepal. The unpredictable weather in Jumla often leads to delay or cancel the flight. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 04: Fly to Jhupal (2320m) Trek to Dunai (2850m) 2-3hrs

After breakfast flight to 45minutes of a scenic flight over mountains will lead us to Airport at Jhupal. Enjoying the panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Peaks, we will proceed through the terraced fields and the bank of Bheri River to arrive at Dunai which is the Administrative Headquarter of Dolpo Region. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 05: Trek from Dunai to Ankhe (2660m) – 6 Hours

After breakfast trek to Ankhe, we cross the new suspension bridge and then turn to west. We begin to climb up the side of treeless Thulo Bheri Valley where it crests a ridge and then enters the Phoksundo River Valley. Passing through Dhera and Rahagaun, we finally reach Ankhe where there's an entrance to the Shey Phoksundo National Park. We stay overnight at campsite.

Day 06: Trek from Ankhe to Sulighat – 6 Hours

After breakfast trek to Sulighat, we follow the route to small ups and downs from our camp at Ankhe along the forested riverbed. Continuing the trek eventually leaves the forests and traverses high above the river. We finally reach Sulighat where we stay overnight at campsite.

Day 07: Trek from Sulighat to Phoksundo Lake (3600m) – 5 Hours

After breakfast continuing along the valley floor to the confluence of the Phoksundo and Pongma Khola, we reach at Phoksundo Lake which is near the Ringmo village. We stay overnight at tented campsite.

Day 08: Rest Day at Phoksundo Lake for Acclimatization

Today Exploring will be a well-deserved rest day at Phoksundo Lake. To better utilize the time, you can hike around the Ringmo village and the Tibetan Buddhist Monastery stay overnight at campsite.

Day 09: Trek from Phoksundo Lake to Phoksundo Lake (3507m) – 5 Hours

After breakfast trek to Phoksundo lake, We continue skirting the Shore of Phoksundo Lake as it contours on the rocky ridge along the western bank. Following the unsteady trail, we finally stop at Phoksundo Khola where we stay overnight at campsite.

Day 10: Trek from Phoksundo Khola to Phoksundo Bhanjyang (4402m) – 7 Hours

After breakfast continue to Walking along the level path through a level path through a glacial valley that now heads due north. Witnessing an old wooden bridge at the confluence of the Phoksundo Lake, we finally reach Phoksundo Bhanjyang where we stay overnight at campsite.

Day 11: Trek from Phoksundo Bhanjyang to Shey Gompa (4126m) via Kang La Pass(5151m) – 6 Hours

Today early morning to visit, we trek up to Kang La. Overlooking the panoramic views down upon a large valley bisected by gushing river, we stop at Shey Gompa at the altitude of 4500m where stay overnight at campsite.

Day 12: Rest Day at Shey Gompa (The Crystal Monastery)

Today Exploring and visit to Crystal Monastery. We can go for local hiking around Shey Gompa which is popularly known as The Crystal Monastery, Our accommodation campsite.

Day 13: Trek from Namduna Gaun (4400m) via Saldang La (4785m) – 7 Hours

After breakfast trek to Namduna Gaun, We start our trek following a route amidst juniper trees descending into a gray stone canyon. Trekking through zigzag path over bare rocks and coarse eroded soil, we eventually reach at the top of Saldang La. We the walk further to Namduna Gaunwhere we stay overnight at Campsite.

Day 14: Trek from Namduna Gaun to Saldang (3903m) – 5 Hours

After breakfasts continue to Namduna Gaun, we continue to climb up a scree slope and then a long traverse along some dusty barren mountains. After walking further for few hours, we eventually reach at Saldang. We stay overnight at campsite.

Day 15: Trek from Saldang to Yangze Gompa – 5 Hours

After breakfast trek to Yangze Gompa. Following the Nang Chu River most of the way, we then pass through the Panzang River to finally reach Yangze Gompa. We stay overnight at Camsite.

Day 16: Trek from Yangze Gompa to Sibu (3942m) – 6 Hours

After breakfast trek to Sibu, We have now two trails that connect Yangze to Sibu. We follow the long way trail heading due west passing through very remote village of Nishagaun. Passing through Shimengaun, we finally reach Sibu where we stay overnight at Campsite.

Day 17: Trek from Sibu to Jeng La Phedi – 6 Hours

After breakfasts continue to Following the Nam Khong Khola for a while on the morning walk, we trek across the caravan of laden yaks en route. Continuing the trek for about five hours, we eventually reach Jeng La Phedi where we stay overnight at Campsite.

Day 18: Trek from Jeng La Phedi to Tokyo Gaun via Jeng La (4369m) – 5 Hours

After breakfast, we trek towards the top of Jeng La Phedi today. Overlooking and enjoying the excellent views of snow ranges to the south including Dhaulagiri Massif, we eventually stop at Tokyo Gaun where we stay overnight at campsite.

Day 19: Trek from Tokyu Gaun to Dho Tarap (4090m) – 5 Hours

After breakfast trek to Dho Tarap Heading eastward along the downhill course of Tarap Chu, we pass through the patches of lush verdant grass both sides of the river. We set up our camp at Dho Tarap where we stay overnight at campsite.

Day 20: Rest Day at Dho Tarap

Today also another Rest day and we can explore around the local areas in Dho Tarap. We stay overnight at the Campsite.

Day 21: Trek from Dho Tarap to Tarap Khola (3800m) – 6 Hours

After breakfast trek to Tarap khola, today's trek can be quite long or it can be simply a moderate walk. We have crafted our itinerary as flexible as possible for you. We arrive at Tarap Khola after trekking for about six hours. Tarap Khola is also known as Kamakharka and we stay overnight at Campsite.

Day 22: Trek from Tarap Khola to Khanigaun (2550m) – 5 Hours

After breakfast trek to Khaniguan, We again continue down the gorge of Tarap River today. The river raises high above on the trail built from the steep stones. Following the trail further, we eventually arrive at Khanigaun where we stay overnight at campsite.

Day 23: Trek from Khanigaun to Tarakot (2281m) – 5 Hours

After breakfast trek to Tarakot, we pass through an area of impressive forest before descending into another gorge. Continuing the trail through the river downstream, we eventually reach Tarakot where we stay overnight at overnight at lodge.

Day 24: Trek from Tarakot to Dunai (2052m) – 6 Hours

After breakfast trek to Dunai, we walk besides the Bheri River in a tremendous gorge with pine forests. We then follow the ingenious path built about seven meters above the river. After the trek of about six hours, we finally reach Dunai where we stay overnight at campsite.

Day 25: Trek from Dunai to Jhupal (2404m) – 3 Hours

After breakfast trek to Jhupal. We will be retracing the journey back to Jhupal from Dunai which is a short distance walk along the Bheri River. We stay overnight at lodge.

Day 26: Trek to Jhupal (2500m) 6hrs

After breakfast trek to Jhufal, Pursuing the escalating trail, we will advance towards Sulighat. From Sulighjat, we will make progress through the birch woods to arrive at the top of the ridge. We will enjoy the views of mountains and the landscapes of Jhupal prior to lowering down to Jhupal. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 27: Flight - Jhupal and Nepalgunj- Kathmandu

After break continues flight, it takes 45 minutes of flight to arrive at Nepalgunj from where we will board another flight to Kathmandu. Disembarking at the Domestic Airport in Kathmandu, we will take a drive through bustling streets of Kathmandu stay overnight at hotel.

Day 28: Final International Departure

Transfer from hotel to International airport you take the returning flight to your hometown. Our representatives will assist you to reach the airport. You return to your home with an unforgettable travel experience in Nepal and happy journey.
